Saturday was a typical gorgeous sunny California day, with a moderate amount of wind. Our pool consisted (in order of ranking) of us, Stanford B, Humboldt, Pacific Lutheran, and Simon Fraser.
After a first round bye, we opened against Humboldt. The game was tight at first with us holding a small lead. Tightening up the defense caused Humboldt to make risky dump passes, leading to multiple turnovers and a pair of Callahans by Dan “Peaches” Walton and Michael Stout. We pulled ahead 12-6, but then struggled a bit to get the last goal for a final score of 13-9.
Simon Fraser is a fairly new team. Their inexperience helped us win 13-1 in a quick game.
Next we played PLU, who gave us a bit of trouble with some precision hucks to start. After switching to a straight-up mark on their main handlers we were able to pull ahead fairly easily. Gordy Stecklein played “the best point he’s ever lost” getting a huge layout d and a nasty footblock, but a couple lucky bounces went PLU’s way. We finished off PLU by a final score of 13-6.
Our last game of the day was against Stanford B. Playing on their own campus on Parents weekend, they had a lot of sideline support that kept them fired up all game. Playing our final game had us a little tired, and our end zone offense struggled. Stout had an enormous sky over double coverage for the score to highlight a sloppy 13-10 win. By going 4-0, we earned a first round bye through to the Quarterfinals...
